What is a Stock & Stock Market?

Stocks are shares of ownership in a corporation. When you purchase shares in a company, you become a part-owner & you get a certificate of your shares. The stock market is a marketplace where securities and ownership stakes in organizations and companies are bought, sold, traded, and issued.

What is a Stock?

A stock is a type of equity investment that represents legal ownership in a company. When you purchase shares in a company, you become a part-owner. You get a piece of paper, a certificate that says that you own part of this company.

And because you own part of the company, you have certain rights. You can vote for changes; you can vote for things that the company should do.

Corporations issue stock to raise money, and it comes in Two (2) variations:

Preferred Stocks

Preferred Stock comes with a predetermined dividend payment.

Common Stocks

When people talk about buying stocks, they’re generally talking about common stocks. Common Stock entitles the stockholder to a proportionate share of a company’s profits or losses. See Different Kinds of Common Stocks

What is Stock Market?

The stock market is made up of exchanges, like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq.

Stocks are listed on a specific exchange, which brings buyers and sellers together and acts as a market for the shares of those stocks. The exchange tracks the supply and demand — and directly related, the price — of each stock.

You place your stock trades through the broker, which then deals with the exchange on your behalf.

Individual traders are typically represented by brokers — these days, that’s often an online broker. You place your stock trades through the broker, which then deals with the exchange on your behalf.

WARNING: Investing in Stocks offer both High Risks & High Rewards. You should consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
